NieR: Reincarnation, Speculations and Wild Mass Guessing
The upcoming NieR: Reincarnation mobile game just released their official gameplay reveal trailer last April 21, 2020. While it showed nothing more than a girl running through some ruins, with a floating ghost-like pet following her, this scene raises lots of questions and guesses.
Who was that girl? What were those ruins she was walking in? And what was that floating ghost-like pet following her?
As of this writing, there’s no official word on specifics from the developers. So instead, all we can offer are speculations and wild mass guessing. Who knows, maybe some of these would actually be correct once the game launches.
Judging from the white hair, the girl could probably be Yonah, from the first Nier game. As for the ghost-like pet following her, it might be the NieR: Reincarnation version of the floating grimoire or pods from the previous titles.
Questions aside, there’s much to expect from the trailer alone. Expansive environments as seen from the temple-like background, detailed graphics, judging from the visuals, and probably advanced movement controls, given previous Nier titles.
The soundtrack which plays during the title, “Memories”, evokes a similar depressive emotion unique to the franchise’s previous titles like Automata. How exactly depressive is yet to be seen, but knowing Yoko Taro’s storytelling style? This game may yet be another emotional punch in the gut that Nier players have come to expect. The music might just be the way to reinforce the mood.
Personally, I would wonder at what kind of philosophical narrative Reincarnation might impart this time. Automata was about finding meaning when all you’ve lived for was taken away. Who knows, maybe this new title would be about fighting tooth and nail to earn every minute of a second life?
